Madison United honored the late Keith Binns on Friday night in a fashion that would have thrilled their founder.
Curt Zastrow (Reedsburg) scored the lone goal on a 35-yard strike in the 75th minute as United blanked rival Madison Fire Red 1-0 in the Madison Soccer Association Division 1 final on Goodman Pitch at Verona's Reddan Soccer Park.
Eric Hook (Verona) posted the clean sheet as Madison United (11-5-2) denied the top-seeded Fire's bid for back-to-back titles and claimed their second crown in the past three years. No. 2 seed United also avenged a pair of losses to Fire Red (10-3-5), which swept the teams' regular-season meetings 2-1 in October and 2-0 in April.
Binns, a native of England who emigrated to Madison in 1955 and was instrumental in the development of soccer in the area, founded Madison United in 1974 and continued to play an integral role in the club until his death Jan. 7 at age 83.
