Brookfield Academy senior forward Nathan Washburn was a unanimous selection as the inaugural Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association/Stefans Soccer Academic All-State Player of the Year.

Washburn had 26 goals and 11 assists in 19 appearances for the Blue Knights (12-5-2) and was named the Midwest Classic Conference Offensive Player of the Year last fall, and excels in math and science in the classroom.

He tops the 11-member boys first team selected by a committee of WSCA members on Sunday night; the first girls Academic All-State team will be chosen in July.

To be considered for the Academic All-State team, student-athletes must be seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or better, score 29 or better on the ACT college admissions test and shown an affinity for service work in their community.

Madison Memorial midfielder Dominick Mesdijan, a University of Wisconsin recruit, was the only player to earn spots on the first team of both the WSCA All-State team and the Academic All-State team. Hudson defender Daniel Klundt, a second-team all-state pick, was a first-team Academic All-State selection.

The committee also named 13 student-athletes to the Academic All-State Honor Roll. Three players who garnered all-state honors were in that group: Milwaukee Marquette midfielder Michael Russell (second team), Racine St. Catherine's forward Jack Kocha (honorable mention) and Whitnall midfielder Joe Schauer (honorable mention), a Wright State recruit who scored 61 goals for the Falcons last fall.
