Milwaukee Marquette senior forward Alec Philippe and Hilltoppers coach Steve Lawrence (Milwaukee Marquette/Marquette) earned high honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the wake of the team's second straight WIAA Division 1 state title.

Philippe was the lone Wisconsin player named to the NSCAA Boys Fall High School All-American team, while Lawrence was the Boys Fall Great Lakes Region Private/Parochial Schools Coach of the Year.

The Hilltoppers (19-2-0) beat Hartland Arrowhead 5-2 in last month's state final to extend their record with their 11th WIAA boys soccer title – all coming in the past 16 years – and the program's 26th state championship overall.

Philippe had a team-high 27 goals and added 12 assists this season, including three assists in the state final, and finished his two-year varsity career with 54 goals and 21 assists. He was one of 56 NSCAA Boys All-Americans this fall and shared the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year award.

Marquette won its final 12 games of the season and is unbeaten in its past 31 matches (29-0-2) against Wisconsin teams. Lawrence has guided his alma mater to a 200-25-15 overall record and six state titles in his 10 seasons at the helm.

He also was named the NSCAA regional coach of the year in 2011; Lawrence was chosen the organization's national coach of the year that year. Owen Finberg of South Kent School (Conn.) earned the national award this year – the Hilltoppers beat the Cardinals 3-1 in a non-conference match Oct. 1 in Chicago.

  • Rice Lake earned the WIAA Sportsmanship Award for last month's state tournament in Milwaukee. It's the second sportsmanship award for the school and the first for boys soccer. Rice Lake advanced to the Division 3 championship game, falling to Mount Horeb 1-0 in the final. Barron, Grafton, Hartland Arrowhead, Kimberly, Madison West, Marquette, Milwaukee University School, Racine St. Catherine's, River Falls and Sturgeon Bay received honorable mention for the award.
