Skyler Felt scored in the 70th minute and fellow freshman Casey Beyers made four saves for the clean sheet as the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team closed out its exhibition season with a 1-0 victory over UW-Green Bay on Saturday night at the McClimon Complex.

Felt took a pass from senior Trevor Wheeler at the top of the box and fired past Phoenix goalkeeper Dary DeWalt (Milwaukee), who had entered the match just three minutes earlier in relief of fellow freshman Kyle Ihn (Kettle Moraine). The Badgers nearly doubled the lead in the 76th when Nick Jones, another freshman, rattled a shot off the crossbar.

DeWalt and Ihn each made one save on the night for the Phoenix.

  • Jeremy Nji (Kimberly) scored the lone goal in the 82nd as the host Phoenix shut out NCAA Division III St. Thomas (Minn.) 1-0 in their exhibition opener Wednesday at Santaga Stadium. Nji found the net after a corner kick by Tyler Swanner, while fellow freshmen Ihn and DeWalt each posted a scoreless half in goal. Green Bay used 21 players, including 14 freshmen.
  • Junior forward Kelmend Islami (South Milwaukee) drew and converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute – his second goal of the night – No. 12 Marquette tie No. 1 Indiana 3-3 on Thursday night at the National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind. The defending national champion Hoosiers outshot the Golden Eagles 17-3 in the first half, and led 3-1 at the break before Marquette battled back in the second 45 minutes. Islami chested down a pass from senior midfielder Bryan Ciesiulka and fired past Indiana keeper Colin Webb in the 56th to pull the Golden Eagles within one, then was fouled near the end line for the late penalty. Sophomore center back Axel Sjoberg had the first goal for Marquette, making it 1-1 in the 13th by picking up a deflected free kick by Paul Dillon.
  • Junior Laurie Bell played a role in four goals as UW-Milwaukee finished off its exhibition schedule with a pair of home wins over Division II sides, blanking Lewis (Ill.) 4-0 on Wednesday and UW-Parkside 3-1 on Sunday. Defenders Andrew Stone (Green Bay Preble) and Aaron Cranfill (New Berlin West) and midfielder Luke Goodnetter (Brookfield East), three seniors who all sat out last season after transferring from UW-Green Bay, had the first three goals for the Panthers against Lewis in an 18-minute stretch spanning halftime before senior midfielder Robbie Boyd (Milwaukee Marquette) scored on a late 35-yard strike. Junior Agustin Rey and freshmen Jonathan Stahr (Milwaukee Thomas More) and Liam Anderson each played 30 minutes in goal in the shutout. Against Parkside, Bell set up junior Kyle Neumann (Appleton West) for the equalizer in the 35th, scored on a 40-yard free kick in the 50th and finished off the scoring in the 61st.
