A Costa Rican national team legend will play in Madison on Sunday night.
Walter "Paté" Centeno, who earned 137 caps for Costa Rica from 1995 to 2009, will play for Madison Stars United in a friendly against the Madison 56ers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Goodman Pitch East on the Madison College campus, and tickets are $5.
Centeno, 42, scored 24 goals in his international career and spent the majority of his club career with Costa Rican power Deportivo Saprissa. However, he spent the 2002-03 season with AEK Athens and played in the UEFA Champions League, scoring in away matches against Real Madrid and against AS Roma. Centeno retired from pro soccer in 2012.
The 56ers (1-2-2), coming off a 3-2 victory over the Elgin Pumas last Saturday, start the second half of their Premier League of America West Division schedule on June 25 against Cedar Rapids Rampage United at Breese Stevens Field.
