Colorado Rapids center back Axel Sjöberg (Marquette) is expected to be out at least six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left hamstring Tuesday.
Sjöberg was injured during the Rapids' 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls in a Major League Soccer match Saturday.
"We are frustrated for Axel, but we will give him our full support during his rehabilitation process,” Rapids sporting director Pádraig Smith said in a team news release. "Everyone at the club will be working hard to make sure he is back on the pitch as soon as possible."
The 25-year-old Sjöberg was named to the MLS Best XI and was one of three finalists for the league's Defender of the Year award last year as Colorado allowed a league-low 32 goals and recorded 13 clean sheets in the 34-game regular season.
"It's been a tough couple of days ... However, my resolve to come back better has never been stronger. Thank you all for your support!" Sjöberg tweeted Wednesday.
