Santi Davila

FC Wisconsin's Santi Davila (Wauwatosa) will travel to Spain next month and compete in a prestigious youth tournament, as the goalkeeper is among 18 players named to the U.S. Club Soccer id2 National Selection International Tour.

U.S. Club Soccer hasn't yet announced the roster, but FC Wisconsin confirmed this week that Davila is the first state player chosen for the event in its eight-year history. (Read news release) In addition to the all-expenses paid trip to Spain, the players also receive invitations to a U.S. youth national training camp in May.

The tour is the final event of the id2 program for players born in 2003, and the team was selected based on players' performances at one of four id2 training camps held throughout the country in 2016. Davila was part of two of those camps, from April 7 to 10 in Raleigh, N.C., and from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2 in Portland, Conn.

"Santi has the build, the athleticism and focus to become a great goalkeeper," FC Wisconsin coach Steve Adlard said in the club news release. "This opportunity will advance his career. I think he will be very successful."

The id2 National Selection team will play in the 17th annual Mediterranean International Cup from April 12 to 16 in northeastern Spain. The event is expected to feature approximately 300 teams from across the world; clubs such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal and Ajax and youth national teams from Brazil and Mexico have participated in past tournaments.

Previous participants in the id2 international tour include: midfielder Christian Pulisic (2012), now with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and a U.S. national team player; defender Tommy Redding (2011), who is currently with the U.S. Under-20 national team and plays for Major League Soccer's Orlando City SC; and forward Mark Segbers (2010), who was a second-team, All-Big Ten Conference selection for the University of Wisconsin as a junior last fall.

  • Three state boys teams are preparing for the final weekend of U.S. Youth Soccer National League play, which is March 10 to 12 in conjunction with the Players College Showcase in Las Vegas. SC Waukesha Blue (3-0-1) is fourth place in the 15-and-under Red Division heading into its last three games. In 18U competition, Milwaukee Bavarians (1-2-1) are sixth in the Blue Division and Elm Grove SC (0-2-2) is last in the Black Division.
