Vitalis Takawira Jr. (Greendale) and the Chicago Fire Under-15/16 team is headed to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Championships.
Takawira scored his fourth goal of the season late in extra time, sealing the Fire's 3-0 victory over Weston FC in a quarterfinal Wednesday night in Miami.
Chicago (19-7-3) advanced to play FC Dallas (27-2-0) in the semifinals July 14 in Carson, Calif. The winner will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy (28-9-3) or Real Colorado (19-4-7) in the final July 16; the losing sides will play for third place.
After a scoreless 80 minutes, the Fire scored twice in the opening 4 minutes of the first 10-minute period of extra time against Weston (23-5-8) before Takawira ran on to a throw-in and scored an insurance goal. He has eight goals overall in Academy play this season, having scored four goals for the club's Under-17/18 team.
