For the second straight offseason, Dan Montanye (Mukwonago/UW-Whitewater) has been named coach at an NCAA Division III men's soccer program.
Montanye, a former UW-Whitewater men's and women's assistant, was hired as the 15th coach in Olivet (Mich.) history earlier this month, taking the reins of the Comets after one season at Iowa Wesleyan.
"I am thrilled to have Dan lead our men's soccer program," Olivet athletic director Ryan Shockey said in a news release. "He is energetic and excited about leading the Comets. He understands the NCAA Division III philosophy, having played at it and coached at it. I believe those traits will make him be a successful coach at Olivet."
The Comets were 4-15-1 overall and finished seventh in the eight-team Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 3-10-1 mark last fall under Dan Bulley, who compiled a 23-35-2 record in three years. Olivet had six straight winning seasons from 2008 through '13, and 2015 was its first losing season in the MIAA since 2007.
Montanye, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation National "C" license, led Iowa Wesleyan to a 4-16-0 overall record in his lone season – the Tigers had posted just one victory over their previous two seasons. He was an assistant for the UW-Whitewater men's and women's teams in 2011, and continued on the men's coaching staff until departing last summer to take over at Iowa Wesleyan.
- Jesse Miech (Stevens Point) was named an assistant in the Northern Illinois men's program last week, following five seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II Illinois-Springfield. Miech also has been an assistant for the Saint Louis, Missouri State, Virginia Tech and Clemson men's teams and the Morningside (Iowa) women's team, along with a stint at UW-Stevens Point, where he worked alongside his mother, legendary former Pointers coach Sheila Miech.
- Tim Boruff is the new volunteer assistant on coach John Trask's staff with the University of Wisconsin men's program. Boruff was the goalkeeper coach at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville last season following three years as an assistant at Missouri-St. Louis, where he played as a keeper from 2008 to '11. He succeeds Stan Anderson (UW-Parkside), who was on the Badgers' staff for the past three seasons.
- Lisa Waltz, who was a graduate assistant for the Carthage women's program for the past two seasons, was named the 10th coach in Alverno history. She succeeds Richard Drake, who led the Inferno to a 2-16-0 overall record and a 0-10-0 mark in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play in his lone season.
- Maranatha Baptist named David Anderson its new women's coach. Anderson played at the school from 2010 to '12 and has been an assistant to men's coach Jeff Pill for the past three seasons. He replaces Peter Huber, who led the Sabercats to a 13-3-2 record and a runner-up finish at the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association Division II National Championships last year in his only season.
- The Sabercats' soccer teams will have new postseason rivals, as the NCCAA announced new regional alignments that will go into effect this fall. Maranatha will be part of the new Division II North Region, along with Faith Baptist (Iowa), Moody Bible (Ill.), North Central (Minn.) and Providence (Canada).
