David Caban (Kenosha Tremper/UW) earned his first cap Sunday, playing the final 5 minutes of host Puerto Rico's 3-1 loss to the U.S. in an international friendly in Bayamón.

The 23-year-old Caban came on in place of Joseph Marrero in the 85th minute in the first meeting between the national teams. 

"To see David play for the Puerto Rican national team against the U.S. is something that he will never forget," Badgers coach John Trask said in a news release. "I know how excited David was for the opportunity. It looks like the coaching staff of Puerto Rico sees the same qualities in David that allowed him to have a very good career at Wisconsin. ... We are hoping this will be the first of many caps for David."

Caban, who was a regular in U.S. youth national camps growing up, had two goals and two assists in 75 appearances (66 starts) with UW from 2011 to '14. He made his debut for Puerto Rico at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championships in Mexico.

Puerto Rico, 152nd in the latest FIFA World Rankings, has two big competitive matches coming up early next month, as they play at Grenada on June 1 and then host Antigua and Barbuda on June 4 in second-round qualifying for the 2017 Caribbean Cup. The top four finishers in the event are expected to earn spots in next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup; Puerto Rico is seeking its first berth in the regional championships.
