The U.S. and Puerto Rican national teams will square off Sunday in Bayamón (11 a.m., FS1, UniMas and UDN) – somewhat surprisingly, the friendly will be the first meeting between the sides.

And a Wisconsin player could feature in the historic match, as midfielder David Caban (Kenosha Tremper/UW) is among the 21 players on the Puerto Rico roster.

The 23-year-old Caban was born in Chicago and was a regular at U.S. youth national team camps, playing in Under-14, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-18 events. In 2013, though, he played for Puerto Rico at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championships in Mexico.

During his college career, Caban had two goals and two assists in 75 appearances (66 starts) with the Badgers from 2011 to '14. While the U.S. is preparing for Copa America Centenario, Puerto Rico is gearing up for key second-round Caribbean Cup matches at Grenada on June 1 and at home against Antigua and Barbuda on June 4.

  • UW's Sam Brotherton played all 90 minutes at center back as the New Zealand national team beat Australian second-division side Western Pride 2-0 in a friendly Wednesday in Brisbane, Australia. The All Whites, who are preparing for next month's OFC Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea, play Redlands United on Sunday.
  • Columbus Crew midfielder Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) wasn't on the final 23-man U.S. roster for the Copa America Centenario, which was announced by manager Jürgen Klinsmann on Saturday. The 25-year-old Finlay was on the preliminary 40-man U.S. squad for the tournament, which starts June 3. On Twitter: @EthanFinlay13
