Josee Stiever (Cedarburg) had a strong junior season at Minnesota last fall, earning spots on the second team of both the All-Big Ten Conference and National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region teams.
The midfielder's performances caught the attention of U.S. Soccer coaches, as she was called into the U.S. Under-23 women's national team's first training camp of 2016. It's the first national team invitation for the 20-year-old Stiever.
The camp starts Monday in Carson, Calif., and concludes with a friendly against the Republic of Ireland full national team on Jan. 25. Illinois coach Janet Rayfield will oversee the camp along with Under-23 coach Steve Swanson – the former Milwaukee Wave player also is an assistant for the full U.S. national team, which is currently in a training camp ahead of a match against Ireland on Jan. 23.
Stiever has played in all 63 matches for the Golden Gophers during her first three college seasons, recording 13 goals and 10 assists. Last fall, she had four goals and four assists and helped Minnesota (12-7-3) advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
