Max Ferdinand set up two goals, and his seventh goal of the season proved to be the game-winner as the host Milwaukee Wave cruised past the St. Louis Ambush 5-2 on Sunday afternoon to finish off an unbeaten Major Arena Soccer League weekend.
A crowd of 2,091 at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena saw newcomers Hans Denissen and Sean Totsch each score his first goal for the Wave (4-2), while Tenzin Rampa (Madison West/UW-Milwaukee) and Tony Patterson (Menomonee Falls/UW-Green Bay) opened the scoring for Milwaukee in a 50-second span in the first quarter.
Two days after a huge 7-6 shootout victory over the previously unbeaten Missouri Comets on the road, the Wave never trailed against the Ambush (0-5). St. Louis pulled within one twice, but goals by Ferdinand in the second quarter and Denissen early in the third restored Milwaukee's two-goal cushion.
Goalkeeper-assistant coach Nick Vorberg stopped 14 of 16 shots for Milwaukee, which has another two-game weekend coming up with matches Friday night at the Chicago Mustangs (4-2) and Saturday night at the expansion Cedar Rapids Rampage (0-5).
Ferdinand's goal was his seventh of the season and he leads the Wave with seven assists – he ranks ninth in the MASL with 14 points. The 40-year-old Vorberg, meanwhile, is third in the league with a 4.34 goals-against average.
