Senior midfielder Andrew Edwards scored both goals as Cedarburg tipped host Mequon Homestead 2-1 on Tuesday night, giving the Bulldogs their first North Shore Conference boys soccer title since 1996.

Edwards' 70th-minute goal was his second game-winning goal in a week – he had the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Grafton last Tuesday.

Cedarburg (13-0-4 overall, 6-0-1 North Shore) finished just ahead of Whitefish Bay (16-1-1, 5-1-0) to claim its sixth conference championship, following titles in 1988, '90, '93, '95 and '96. The Bulldogs beat the Blue Dukes 3-0 in a conference opener Sept. 1; Bay hasn't lost since and is ranked first in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, while Cedarburg is ranked third.

  • Madison West closed out its 11th Big Eight Conference championship but first since 2009, thumping Janesville Parker 10-0 on Tuesday to finish 7-0-2 in the league.
  • Also in the Big Eight, Beloit Memorial senior Jose Barron scored his 100th career goal in the Purple Knights' 4-2 win over Madison La Follette. And Middleton's Bradan Allen scored the opener in Middleton's 7-1 rout of Janesville Craig – the junior forward had at least one goal in all nine of the Cardinals' conference matches this season.
  • Senior A.J. Breitbach and junior Erik Moller scored and senior Matt Reisdorf posted the clean sheet as Oregon blanked Madison Edgewood 2-0 at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona to clinch its seventh consecutive Southern Badger Conference title. The Panthers are unbeaten in their past 42 conference matches (40-0-2) since a 2-1 overtime loss to Edgewood back on Sept. 23, 2008.
  • Milwaukee Marquette moved up one place to seventh in the USA Today/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Super 25, while Whitefish Bay rose one spot to No. 22. Brookfield East was among other teams receiving votes in the national poll. The Hilltoppers lead the Region VI rankings, which also include Whitefish Bay at No. 3, Brookfield East at No. 5, Hudson at No. 7 and Cedarburg at No. 9.
  • Marquette rose three spots to 38th in the Top Drawer Soccer Fab 50 this week and is fifth in the Great Lakes Region. The Hilltoppers continue to lead the website's Wisconsin rankings, with Cedarburg second and Whitefish Bay third.
  • There will be a battle of top-ranked teams Saturday night as Marquette (12-2-0), ranked first in the WSCA Division 1 state poll all season, plays host to Whitefish Bay. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Quad Athletic Complex.
