Patrick Hodan (Brookfield/Milwaukee Marquette) has earned a lot of accolades in his soccer career: All-America honors as a high school player and in college, state and conference player of the year awards and Academic All-American citations.
But he's never been part of a U.S. Soccer Federation national team camp. Until now.
The Notre Dame midfielder was one of 28 players called in by U.S. Under-23 national team coach Andi Herzog for a College Identification training camp. The four-day camp, which starts Aug. 5 in Carson, Calif., will allow coaches to scout college players who could potentially be part of 2016 Summer Olympic qualifying this fall.
Hodan, heading into his senior season with the Irish, was one of the country's top players last fall.
He had a team-high nine goals and added three assists and was named a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He also was a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy – given to the nation's top player – and the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
“It would have been a tragedy if Patrick wasn't selected for the camp, as a first-team All-American, an academic All-American and the offensive player of the year in possibly the strongest soccer conference in the country,” Notre Dame coach Bobby Clark said in a news release. “I think his credentials stood out. We're delighted, and I think he will represent us very well."
Hodan, the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association and Gatorade Wisconsin state player of the year following his senior season at Marquette in 2011, has 26 goals and 13 assists in 65 career appearances (29 starts) for the Fighting Irish.
