Defender Sam Brotherton, an incoming freshman at the University of Wisconsin, played the full 90 minutes at center back as host New Zealand and Ukraine played a 0-0 draw in the opening match of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup today in front of a sellout crowd of 25,000 in his hometown of Auckland.

Brotherton was involved in two chances for the Junior All Whites, setting up Matthew Ridenton's close-range header with a header of his own off a corner kick in the 22nd minute and flashing a header wide in the 91st. (Watch highlights below)

New Zealand next plays the U.S. at 2 a.m. Tuesday in Auckland. The match will be televised live on Fox Sports 1.

• Two players with state ties earned honorable mention on the USL Premier Development League Team of the Week: Marquette's C. Nortey, who had the lone goal in the Des Moines Menace's 1-0 victory over WSA Winnipeg last Saturday, and UW-Green Bay's Audi Jepson (Green Bay Preble) of the St. Louis Lions.
• Milwaukee Wave goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra was named an assistant for the UW-Milwaukee women's program. "It's great to have someone from the area be able to join our staff and make a seamless transition," new Panthers coach Troy Fabiano said of Feenstra, a native of the Netherlands who also coaches at Waukesha West High School and with SC Waukesha. "He's a great asset and he will be a big help to not only our goalkeepers, but to our team as a whole."
