Before heading to Madison to start his career with the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team in the fall, Sam Brotherton will represent his country.

The 18-year-old defender, who signed a national letter of intent to play for the Badgers, was named to host New Zealand's roster for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

The Junior All Whites are in Group A with the U.S., Ukraine and Myanmar for the tournament, which is May 30 to June 20 in seven cities across New Zealand. They will play their first two matches, May 30 against Ukraine and June 2 against the U.S., at North Harbour Stadium in Brotherton's hometown of Auckland.

Brotherton had one goal in 16 appearances for Wanderers SC in the ASB Premiership during the 2014-15 season, which wrapped up in March. He also was part of a training camp with the full New Zealand national team before its friendly against South Korea and was on the bench for the March 31 match in Seoul.

  • UW midfielder Rose Lavelle was one of 22 players named to the U.S. Under-23 women's team for the Four Nations tournament, which starts Wednesday in Norway. Lavelle is one of 19 college players on the roster for the Americans, who will take on Sweden on May 27, host Norway on May 29 and England on May 29.
  • Badgers midfielder Kinley McNicoll reportedly will train with the Canadian Under-23 women's national team ahead of the Pan Am Games, which are in July in Hamilton, Ontario. Canada, the defending champion in the competition, is expected to announce its roster in early June.
  • UW midfielder Micaela Powers was named to the USL W-League Team of the Week after scoring twice in the Dayton Dutch Lions' 5-2 victory over Braddock Road Stars Elite in a season opener Saturday in Cincinnati.
  • New UW-Milwaukee women's coach Troy Fabiano named Steve Golas as his assistant on Monday. Golas was the inaugural coach for NAIA program Texas A&M-Texarkana last season, leading the Eagles to a 10-2-3 record last season, and previously has been the men's coach at Illinois College and William Penn (Iowa) and women's coach at Lewis and Clark (Ore.) and Millikin (Ill.) in addition to several stints as an assistant. "I'm really excited to have Steve on board," Fabiano said in a news release. "He has a great deal of head coaching experience and is a tremendous recruiter. He is a real high-energy guy and relates to the players extremely well."
