Calum Mallace

Calum Mallace (Marquette) and the Montreal Impact will play for the CONCACAF Champions League title and a berth in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mallace played the full 90 minutes as the Impact lost to Costa Rica's Liga Deportiva Alajuelense 4-2 in the second leg of their semifinal series Tuesday night in Alajuela. The aggregrate score was 4-4, but Montreal became the first Canadian team to advance to the CCL final thanks to the two away goals it scored Tuesday – the Impact blanked Alajuelense 2-0 in the first leg March 18 in Montreal.

Montreal will face Costa Rica's Herediano or Mexico's Club America in the two-leg final April 22 and 29, with the second leg at home. The Impact join Real Salt Lake as the only Major League Soccer teams to advance to the CCL final.

Herediano dropped Club America 3-0 last month in Costa Rica; the second leg is Wednesday night in Mexico City. Mexican clubs have won the CCL each of the six seasons since the competition replaced the Champions Cup, the previous CONCACAF club championship, and won the final three Champions Cups.

  • Midfielder Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW-Green Bay) scored the first goal of his pro outdoor career Saturday, helping the Rochester Rhinos beat the host Pittsburgh Riverhounds 2-1 in a USL match. Walls, wearing the captain's armband, was taken down just outside the box on the left side in the 28th minute. On the ensuing free kick, he fired a ball over the wall that bent in at the near post past Riverhounds goalkeeper Ryan Thompson for the opening goal. Watch the goal below. On Twitter: @TWalls20
  • Alex Horwath (UW) saved a penalty in his debut for Norwegian club SK Brann, but host Fredrikstad equalized in the 92nd minute as the sides tied 1-1 in a 1. Division season opener Monday. The 27-year-old keeper, who joined the Bergen club after starring for Ljungskile SK in the Swedish second division last year, dove to his right to deny Steffen Nystrøm from the spot to preserve the lead for 10-man SK Brann but the home side salvaged a point in stoppage time. • Charles Kazlauskas (Milwaukee Thomas More) and Helmond Sport posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season, topping De Graafschap 2-1 on Friday and Almere City 1-0 on Monday to move up to 18th in the Netherlands' second-tier Jupiler League. Helmond Sport (7-18-8) has 29 points, four more than 19th-place Fortuna Sittard and seven ahead of last-place RKC Waalwijk. The bottom teams could be subject to relegation, depending on the status of amateur teams in the Topklasse and Hoofdklasse.
  • Players with Wisconsin ties played significant roles as the Chicago Red Stars rolled past Missouri 6-0 and Iowa State 3-0 in 45-minute exhibition matches Saturday in St. Louis. Cara Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW) had a goal in each match and added two assists in the opener, Mary Luba (Shorewood/Marquette) and Valerie Gonyo (New Berlin/Waukesha Catholic Memorial) also scored and Michele Dalton (UW) and Monica Gonyo (New Berlin/Waukesha Catholic Memorial) each posted a clean sheet in goal as the team continued preparations for its National Women's Soccer League season opener against the Seattle Reign on April 18. None of the state players have been signed by the Red Stars, who announced 18 of the 20 players on their opening-day roster Monday. Dalton, who played professionally in Iceland and Sweden the past two years, and Walls, a third-round draft pick, appear to be among the possible signings for the final two spots. NWSL teams also will be looking to sign amateur players this season with many players to miss time because of the Women's World Cup.
