March 4, 1996: Three players with state ties were selected in the inaugural Major League Soccer College Draft. Midfielder Mike Gentile (UW) was taken No. 9 overall in the first round by the Colorado Rapids, defender Scott Lamphear (UW) went 11th to the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the second round, and midfielder Jesse Marsch (Racine Case) was picked No. 21 by D.C. United in the third round. Marsch went on to make 321 appearances for D.C. United, Chicago Fire and Chivas USA and played in each of the league's first 14 seasons before retiring after the 2009 season; neither Gentile nor Lamphear appeared in an MLS match.
