International notes: Lavelle called in for U.S. Under-23 trip to Spain

University of Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle is headed to Spain with the U.S. Under-23 women's national team.

Lavelle and her teammates leave Feb. 21 and will play in tournament in La Manga, Spain, with matches scheduled against Japan on Feb. 26, Norway on Feb. 28 and England on March 2.

The 22-player U.S. roster for the event includes 14 professional players, while Lavelle is one of four players from last year's U.S. Under-20 World Cup team. She's been a first-team, All-Big Ten Conference selection each of her two seasons with the Badgers and was named a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America last fall.

Illinois coach Janet Rayfield will lead the Under-23 team, as head coach Steve Swanson will be serving as an assistant to Jill Ellis with the full national team at the Algarve Cup in Portugal at the same time.

  • Goalkeeper Dafydd Jones (Cardinal Stritch) and Wales went 1-2 and finished third in their four-team UEFA Futsal Euro 2016 preliminary qualifying group last month in Podgorica, Montenegro. Jones played all 120 minutes at the tournament, stopping 37 of 43 shots over the three matches. He made 12 saves in a 3-0 loss to group winner Finland on Jan. 14, turned aside 18 shots in a 2-1 loss to Montenegro the next day and posted seven saves as Wales closed out the event with a 2-1 victory over Cyprus on Jan. 17.
