Three Wisconsin natives are part of teams that will play in the NCAA Division III women's soccer Final Four this week at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo.
Two of those players are teammates at Johns Hopkins (Md.) – junior defender Hope Lundberg (Rhinelander), who played high school soccer at Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.), and sophomore midfielder Meg Van de Loo (Eau Claire Memorial).
Lundberg has appeared in all 24 matches for the 20th-ranked Blue Jays (19-3-2), recording two goals and an assist. She's started six games, including the 1-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 9 Thomas More (Ky.) on Nov. 23 that gave the team its first Final Four berth.
Van de Loo scored three goals in the team's first nine matches of the season, but has been sidelined since Sept. 20 because of injury.
Johns Hopkins takes on fifth-ranked Williams, Mass. (20-1-1) in a national semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The other semifinal pits No. 1 Lynchburg, Va. (25-0-1) against Illinois Wesleyan (18-6-1) at 5 p.m. Friday, with the winners to meet for the national title at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Junior Allisa Gurtner (Middleton) is a backup goalkeeper for Illinois Wesleyan, which also is making its Final Four debut. Gurtner has played 144 minutes in four relief appearances for the Titans this season, stopping three of the four shots she's faced.
