After bringing teams from England and Germany to Breese Stevens Field the past two seasons, the Madison 56ers will play host to another European side next spring as they prepare for their 11th season in the National Premier Soccer League.
The Under-23 side from Dutch club v.v. DOVO will play the 56ers on April 29 as part of a two-week tour of the Midwest. The team's coach is Harold van Ineveld, who coached in the Madison area from 2001 to '04 as part of the Winning Mood program.
The team will feature mostly 19- and 20-year-olds who are playing in the country's top amateur league for their age, according to van Ineveld – he also is an assistant coach for the Under-17 team at FC Twente of the top-level Eredivisie.
While the NPSL schedule hasn't been completed, the first Midwest Region matches likely won't be until May.
DOVO is an acronym for "Door Ons Vrienden Opgericht," which translates to "Established by our friends." The club was formed in 1933 in Veenendaal, about a half-hour southeast of Amsterdam, and has a partnership with Eredivisie club Vitesse Arnhem. DOVO's top team plays in the Hoofdklasse, the fourth division in the Netherlands.
The 56ers have played four international matches since starting their NPSL program in 2005, winning three and tying one. The team has played University of Portsmouth FC each of the past two years, and general manager Cristian Brei said the English side could visit Breese Stevens Field again in 2015.
