Aug. 26, 2004: Lindsay Tarpley (Madison) scored as the U.S. women's national team outlasted Brazil 2-1 after extra time to win the gold medal at the Athens Olympics. The 20-year-old Tarpley, one of two college players on the team, gave the Americans the lead in the 39th minute when her shot from about 25 yards out curled inside the left post for her eighth international goal. Brazil equalized in the 73rd and the teams went into extra time, where a header by Abby Wambach provided the game-winner in the 112th as the U.S. won one final championship for several of the legendary '91ers – it was the final competition for Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett.
