WSCA boys state polls: Aug. 25, 2014
Being ranked second in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association preseason boys polls turned out to be a good omen for three of the four teams that occupied the spot.
Green Bay Preble (Division 1), Green Bay Notre Dame (Division 3) and Racine Prairie School (Division 3) – all WIAA state runners-up last season – each moved up to the top spot in their respective divisions in the first poll of the regular season.
Defending Division 2 state champion Oregon was the only preseason No. 1 to keep its position. Four teams moved into the rankings: No. 3 Neenah and No. 5 Kenosha Tremper in Division 1, No. 5 Grafton in Division 2 and No. 5 Racine St. Catherine's in Division 4 – all but Tremper were honorable mention in the preseason polls.
Reigning state champ Ashland slipped from first to fourth in Division 3 after seeing some long streaks end Saturday.
The Oredockers opened the season with a 1-1 tie against host Chippewa Falls – they came into the season riding a 19-game winning streak and didn't allow a goal in their final 11 games last fall. Ashland, which had outscored foes 107-3 in their winning streak, then lost to Eau Claire North 2-1, snapping a 20-game unbeaten run.
