It was only an exhibition, but the UW-Green Bay women's soccer team gave coach Kacey Burke a victory in her first game at the helm.
Junior Sydney Born scored in the 74th minute and sophomore Karina Fredette added another goal in the final 10 minutes as the host Phoenix blanked Viterbo 2-0 in an exhibition match Sunday at Santaga Stadium.
"With a new coach and new players, we're all still trying to get a feel for one another and that will come," said Burke, a former U.S. women's national team player who took over the program on July 18. "We took a good step today, and I think the team got an idea at how well we can play together."
Green Bay plays host to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), like Viterbo an NAIA program, in its final exhibition match next Monday. The Phoenix open the regular season Aug. 22 at home against Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis.
