Madison West's annual Alumni boys soccer match will have special meaning this year.

The Aug. 16 game at Mansfield Stadium not only will help the Regents prepare for the upcoming 2014 season, but it also will serve as a fundraiser for the Chris Vasquez Scholarship Fund.

Vasquez, the West varsity head coach for the past 21 years, passed away suddenly of a brain aneurysm in February. He was 58.

The teams will wear special jerseys for the Alumni game, t-shirts will be on sale and the Vasquez family will be auctioning off many of the coach's trophies, plaques and awards, with proceeds going to the Scholarship Fund. A donation also will be made to Millennium Soccer Club.

Vasquez led West to a 352-112-56 record, guiding the Regents to eight Big Eight Conference titles and five WIAA Division 1 state tournament appearances in his tenure. Peter Dermody, a West alum who played for Vasquez, was named to succeed his former coach.

Kickoff for the Alumni Game is 11 a.m. For questions about the fundraiser or to donate, contact Bowen Best at bowenbest11@gmail.com.
