Aug. 6, 2003: Greg Howes gave host Milwaukee Wave United the lead in the 2nd minute, but Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire scored the final four goals – three of them coming with a man advantage – as they cruised to a 4-1 victory in a fourth-round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match. A crowd of 3,773 at Uihlein Soccer Park waited out a 50-minute weather delay and saw the A-League side open the scoring when Howes shook free on the left side and finished off a cross from John Ball. But Wave United's upset bid fizzled out, as Chris Armas equalized for the Fire in the 14th and the home side was reduced to 10 men when Chad Dombrowski (West Allis Hale/UW-Milwaukee) received yellow cards in the 17th and 29th minutes. Ante Razov put Chicago ahead in the 34th, Evan Whitfield made it 3-1 off a feed from Razov in the 61st and Dipsy Selolwane finished off the scoring in the 80th.
