The Blue and Gold boys teams went back and forth in the 23rd annual Wisconsin Masonic All-Star Game last Saturday afternoon, but the scoreboard at UW-Whitewater's Fiskum Field still showed zeroes late in the second half.

But Nick Gonzales (Menomonee Falls) converted a penalty kick with approximately 5 minutes remaining as the Blue pulled out a 1-0 victory in the match featuring some of the state's top graduated seniors. Five players scored as the Gold team cruised to a 5-1 victory in the girls game that kicked off the matches.

Gonzales – headed to UW-Oshkosh in the fall – finished from the spot following a handball in the box for the lone goal in the boys game, while goalkeeper Tim Fox (Racine St. Catherine's) posted the clean sheet – the St. Norbert recruit was named MVP of the match.

"It was a great game with multiple opportunities for both sides," Hartland Arrowhead coach Jeff Staus, one of the two co-coaches for the Gold side, wrote in an email.

Midfielders Darian Molter (Marshfield) and Jen Hoerter (Stevens Point), forwards Sarah Mondschein (Madison West) and Ellen Jesse (Middleton) and defender Anna Batley (Appleton North) scored for the Gold, who raced out to a 3-0 halftime in the girls game. Gold defender Elise Brown (Madison West), who will play at Washington-St. Louis (Mo.), earned the MVP award.

The matches closed out a week of festivities organized by the Wisconsin Masonic Soccer Foundation, including a youth camp, training sessions for the all-stars, a cook-out and a recognition breakfast.
