July 26, 1998: San Jose Clash goalkeeper Andy Kirk (Milwaukee Marquette) posted the clean sheet and UCLA midfielder Peter Vagenas set up the first two goals and scored the last one from the penalty spot as the U.S. Under-23 national team blanked the Milwaukee Rampage 3-0 in a friendly watched by 2,112 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park. Vagenas assisted on Chris Brown's goal in the 54th minute and played a ball into the box that went in off Rampage defender Pat White (Milwaukee Pius/UW-Parkside) for an own goal in the 67th before converting a penalty after Evan Whitfield was taken down in the box in the 85th. The U.S. Under-23 team, under the direction of the late Clive Charles, was preparing for the 2000 Olympics – the Americans advanced to the semifinals in Sydney, Australia, but lost to Spain 3-1 and then fell to Chile 2-0 in the bronze-medal match.
