Mia Espino will join the UW-Parkside women's soccer program next month for preseason training for her first college season. But first, the midfielder from Chicago will be part of two training camps with the Guatemalan national team.

Espino, who turns 20 on Sept. 6, is one of 33 players called in by coach Benjamin Monterroso for camps Tuesday and Wednesday and July 21 to 23.

Guatemala is preparing for October's CONCACAF Women's Championship – the eight-team tournament will serve as qualifying for the 2015 Women's World Cup. The top three finishers will earn spots in the 24-team event in Canada, while the fourth-place side will face the third-place team from South America for another spot.

"La Seleccion Chapina," which has never qualified for the Women's World Cup, claimed a berth in the CONCACAF Championship by beating Panama 1-0, Honduras 3-2 and Belize 5-0 to win its group in Central American qualifying in May. They are 76th in the latest FIFA Women's World Rankings and seventh among the 33 teams in CONCACAF.

Espino has played in six matches for the Guatemalan Under-20 team, three each in the 2012 and '14 CONCACAF Under-20 Championships. Her sister Jasmine, who wrapped up her career at Parkside last fall, earned three caps with the country's full national team in March 2013 – the sisters' parents are both natives of Guatemala.
