July 9, 2004: Greg Howes' 75th-minute goal snapped a tie and gave Milwaukee Wave United a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Beach Mariners in an A-League match watched by 1,301 at Uihlein Soccer Park. Johnny Torres opened the scoring for the Wave with his team-best sixth goal of the season in the 14th minute, only to see the visitors level through Hamisi Amani-Dove in the 31st. Howes, though, brought down a pass from substitute Digital Takawira, pulled Mariners goalkeeper Matt Nelson off his line and calmly finished to put Milwaukee in front again. "I had a lot of goal to shoot at. You don't get many opportunities that golden, especially in outdoor," said Howes, a longtime star indoors for the Milwaukee Wave. Keeper Jim Larkin made sure Wave United extended its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), stopping Kevin Knott's bid for a stoppage-time equalizer.
