It's been nearly a week since players and coaches from Milwaukee DSHA, Waunakee, Waukesha Catholic Memorial and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption celebrated WIAA state championships at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Let's wrap up the prep girls season with some news, notes and stats.
- Goals by senior Cristina From in the 9th minute and sophomore Jo Rolli in the 53rd sparked Catholic Memorial (25-2-1) to a 2-0 victory over Mount Horeb in the Division 3 final. That was the Crusaders' seventh WIAA state title, tying them with Whitefish Bay for the most girls championships. It was their third straight state title, after they won in Division 2 in 2012 and '13, and all of their championships have come since 2000. Oh, one more thing: From was one of only three seniors on the Catholic Memorial roster this season.
- It was Crusaders coach John Burke's seventh state title, extending his record for the most WIAA girls championships won by a coach. Ozaukee's Eric Liebergen (2003, '05, '06 and '13), Whitefish Bay's Mark Botterill (1994, 1998 to 2000) and Brookfield Central's Bryan Yenor (2002 to '05) all have led four teams to state titles.
- Burke, who has the most victories and best winning percentage of any girls coach in state history, has a 430-47-32 record in 20 seasons.
- Catholic Memorial is unbeaten in its past 18 postseason matches (17-0-1), with the lone tie a 1-1 draw against Pewaukee in a sectional semifinal June 12 – the Crusaders advanced 4-2 on penalty kicks that night. They've outscored opponents 91-4 and have posted 14 shutouts since their most recent playoff loss, which was 1-0 in overtime to Madison Edgewood in a Division 2 state semifinal in 2011.
- Waunakee (24-5-0), which got goals from Macie Maulbetsch in the 67th minute and Olivia Zaleski in the 69th to rally past Waukesha West 2-1 in the state final, became the first public school to win a Division 2 title since Monona Grove in 2003. The Warriors played their final three games of the season without senior standout Emily Mouille, a Marquette recruit who was injured in their sectional semifinal victory.
- Senior Mary Sigler set up Jasmine Hunn's 50th-minute equalizer and scored the game-winner 5 minutes from time as Assumption (21-3-1) rallied past New Holstein 2-1 in the inaugural Division 4 state final. Sigler, who will play basketball at NCAA Division II Regis (Colo.) next season, finished the season with 40 goals.
- With Waunakee and Assumption winning their first state titles, a total of 28 teams have now won WIAA state championships since Whitefish Bay claimed the first one back in 1983.
- DSHA (19-5-2) was ranked first in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 state poll for most of the season, but was winless in its final three regular-season games. The Dashers, though, outscored playoff foes 20-2 with four shutouts to claim their third WIAA title with a 1-0 win over Schofield D.C. Everest. Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Myzewski stopped all seven shots she faced in the final for her 16th clean sheet of the season, making junior Maria Kass' 6th-minute goal stand up for the final 74 minutes.
- No state teams were ranked in the final Student Sports Fab 50 or the National Soccer Coaches Association Top 20. Waukesha West was seventh and Catholic Memorial was eighth in the season's final NSCAA Region III poll.
- Three of the four state champions were No. 1 seeds in their sectionals or brackets, with Assumption a No. 2 seed.
- Wisconsin was the last state in the country to finish its prep girls soccer season this year, which led to some players having to choose between Saturday's WIAA state finals and the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Championships, which kicked off the same day in Beavercreek, Ohio. That will be the case again in 2015, as the WIAA state finals are scheduled for June 20 and the Region II tournament starts the same day at the Scheels USA Youth Sports Complex in Appleton and Southwest Park in De Pere. - Catholic Memorial sophomore Emily Cervantes finished the season with 66 goals, the second-best goal total in state history according to the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association record book. Ozaukee's Ashley Bares scored 72 goals in 2005.
