Neither of the Wisconsin natives who were training with women's national teams the past few weeks saw action in their respective teams' recent matches.

Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) was an unused sub in two UEFA 2015 Women's World Cup qualifiers for the Republic of Ireland. The Irish beat Croatia 1-0 last Saturday in Dublin, then tied Russia 0-0 on Thursday in Krasnoarmeysk.

Ireland (3-2-2) is in third place out of six teams in Group A with three games left. Germany (8-0-0) has nearly clinched the group title and a berth in next year's Women's World Cup. Russia (5-1-1) is in prime position to finish second – the top four runners-up from the seven groups will play off for the last European berth in the tournament in Canada.

The 26-year-old Smyth, who plays for Amazon Grimstad in Norway's Toppserien, has 30 caps for the Republic of Ireland, which fell two spots to No. 32 in the FIFA Women's World Rankings that were released Friday.

Meanwhile, FC Kansas City striker Sarah Hagen (Appleton North/UW-Milwaukee) didn't make the 18-player gameday roster for either of the U.S. women's national team's two home friendlies against France.

The top-ranked Americans won 1-0 on Saturday in Tampa, Fla., then rallied for a 2-2 draw on Thursday in East Hartford, Conn. – the U.S. is unbeaten in its past 84 home games (74-0-10), a streak dating to Nov. 6, 2004.

While she didn't play in either match, Hagen was the subject of a video feature on the U.S. Soccer website.

  • UW midfielder Rose Lavelle played the full 90 minutes as the U.S. Under-20 women's national team completed a two-game sweep of its French counterparts, winning 2-1 last Friday in Plougastel, France. Lavelle's long throw-in set up Savannah Jordan's 29th-minute goal as the Americans won the first friendly between the teams 1-0 on June 10 in Plabennec.
