Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) played a key role Tuesday night as the Columbus Crew advanced in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, despite having two players sent off.
Finlay was fouled by Indy Eleven midfielder Brad Ring in the 113th minute, leading to Jairo Arrieta's penalty kick that gave the nine-man Crew a 2-1 victory over the North American Soccer League team after extra time in Akron, Ohio.
The Crew advance to play at fellow Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire in a fifth-round match next Wednesday in Bridgeview, Ill.
Finlay, who played all 120 minutes in the fourth-round game at the University of Akron's FirstEnergy Stadium, drew the decisive penalty after taking a throw-in from defender Chad Barson on the left side and working into the box.
“Chad threw it to my feet and I felt (Indy defender A.J.) Corrado and saw the one guy was doubling down and tried to spin him and take the line," Finlay told The Columbus Dispatch (Read full article). "I baited Ring into making a play and he stepped right on my foot. It's minimal contact, but it's contact in the box. We got the penalty and Jairo had a great finish.”
Ring has connections to Wisconsin, as he played with the Princeton-56ers – since renamed as the Madison 56ers – in the National Premier Soccer League in 2007 and '08. Rookie defender Andrew Stone (Green Bay Preble/UW-Milwaukee), who missed Indy Eleven's past few matches due to concussion, didn't play but was on the gameday roster.
