Oshkosh North, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld and Cudahy-St. Francis pulled off the biggest upsets of this week's WIAA girls regional semifinals.

Jessica Roberts scored 2 minutes, 30 seconds into overtime as North (5-12-0), seeded seventh in the bottom half of the Division 2 Cedarburg sectional, posted a 3-2 victory over host and second-seeded West Bend West (13-10-1) on Thursday night.

Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld (9-8-2), also a No. 7 seed, knocked off host and No. 2 seed Watertown Luther Prep 2-1 in the upper bracket of the Division 4 Ozaukee sectional. The Phoenix (5-9-0) had beaten the Vanguards 2-0 on May 6.

And sixth-seeded Cudahy-St. Francis ousted third-seeded Milwaukee South 2-1, beating the Cardinals (8-6-2) for its first win of the season after 17 losses.

All told, higher-seeded teams advanced in 109 of the 123 matches (88.6 percent). The other 11 upsets were by sides seeded one spot lower than their opponent – either No. 5 seeds defeating No. 4 seeds or ninth-seeded teams getting past eighth-seeded sides.

Here's the breakdown by division:

Division 1  28 of 32
Division 2  29 of 32
Division 3  26 of 30
Division 4  26 of 29

  • Four matches were tied through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes and needed penalty kicks to determine which team would advance – the higher-seeded side won the shootout in all four of those games.
  • Twenty-three teams scored 10 goals or more, and all but one of those teams posted shutouts. Speaking of clean sheets, 82 of the 123 games ended with one or both teams being blanked – that's 66.7 percent of the matches. The Division 4 game between Oshkosh Lourdes and Omro was the only scoreless draw.
  • Waukesha Catholic Memorial scored the most goals, beating Milwaukee St. Joan Antida 17-0 in a Division 3 opener. The Crusaders have won their past 13 playoff games, outscoring opponents 71-2 with 11 shutouts in that span.
  • There are compelling matchups throughout Saturday's regional finals, but these four Division 1 games jumped out: Schofield D.C. Everest (21-3-0) plays host to Hudson (18-2-0) – the Evergreens have won 12 in a row and ended Superior's 15-game winning streak with a 7-1 rout on Thursday. ... Arch-rivals Madison West (11-2-3) and Madison Memorial (8-9-3) , who both call Mansfield Stadium home, will meet under the lights at Goodman Pitch at Verona's Reddan Soccer Park. The teams tied 0-0 in a Big Eight Conference match May 1. ... Menomonee Falls (20-2-0), ranked first in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 state poll, plays host to Brookfield Central (12-2-1) – Falls beat the Lancers 1-0 in Greater Metro Conference play May 20. ... Kimberly (17-2-2) entertains Appleton North (15-3-1), eight days after beating the Lightning 1-0 in Fox Valley Association action. Full schedule
