Dani Rhodes wasn't even in high school the last time the Waukesha Catholic Memorial girls soccer team lost a game.

But the sophomore forward played a big role Tuesday night as Waukesha West ended the Crusaders' lengthy winning and unbeaten streaks.

Rhodes converted a 79th-minute penalty kick to tie the score, and it was her shot that deflected off a Catholic Memorial defender and into the net for an own goal in the 92nd as the host Wolverines posted a 2-1 double-overtime victory in a Classic 8 Conference match.

It was the Crusaders' first loss since May 24, 2012, when they also dropped a 2-1 decision to West. Catholic Memorial hadn't lost in its 44 games since then (43-0-1) and had won its past 29 games, believed to be the longest winning streak in state girls soccer history.

Senior Cristina From scored in the 21st to give the Crusaders (14-1-0) – ranked 18th in the country by Student Sports and first in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 state poll – the early lead and it looked like the slim lead would hold up.

But Wolverines senior defender Carly Hoffman, who will join From at NCAA Division I Western Illinois in the fall, was fouled in the box and Rhodes made no mistake from the spot with just 84 seconds left in the 80 minutes of regulation time.

West (12-3-0), which was ranked first in the Division 2 state poll heading into the week, won its first 10 matches of the season but had lost three of its previous four before the big win. The Wolverines play host to Racine Prairie School, ranked first in Division 4, in a non-conference match Thursday night.

  • For the second time this season, Milwaukee DSHA prevailed in a matchup between the top two ranked teams in the Division 1 state poll. Allie Andreski scored in the 78th minute and fellow sophomore Olivia Myszewski made six saves for the clean sheet Tuesday as the host and top-ranked Dashers tipped No. 2 Brookfield Central. DSHA has allowed only three goals and has 12 shutouts in its 14 matches, outscoring state foes 29-0 in 10 games. The Dashers beat then-No. 2 Menomonee Falls 2-0 on April 23.
  • Nicole Sanders scored twice in a 10-minute stretch spanning halftime as Sugar River rallied past host Lodi 3-1 on Tuesday, ending the Blue Devils' 27-game Capitol Conference winning streak. Sanders' free kick in the final seconds of the first half deflected in off the Lodi goalkeeper to pull the Raiders level, and she converted a penalty in the 49th for her seventh goal of the season to give the visitors the lead. Fellow sophomore Vanessa Narveson added her team-best 13th of the year in the 68th for Sugar River, which was the last team to beat Lodi in league play with a 3-0 victory on April 14, 2011.
  • Senior Emily Mouille scored in the 13th minute and set up Samantha Duhr's 57th-minute conversion as Waunakee blanked visiting Reedsburg 2-0 on Wednesday, extending its Northern Badger Conference winning streak to 56 games. Mouille, a Marquette recruit, has 21 goals and seven assists – meaning she has played a role in 73 percent of the Warriors' goals this season (28 of 38).
  • Catholic Memorial remained 18th in the Student Sports Fab 50 released earlier Tuesday, while DSHA moved up seven spots to No. 41 and Brookfield Central made its season debut at No. 47. All three teams stayed put in the website's Great Lakes Region rankings, with the Crusaders second, the Dashers sixth and the Lancers ninth.
  • Every state in the country will have state-sponsored high school soccer competitions starting next fall, as South Dakota became the final state to add the sport earlier this week. Soccer for teenage players in the state has been run through the South Dakota State Soccer Association's High School Committee since 1997, with teams representing high schools and wearing the same colors as their schools' other athletic teams. However, the South Dakota High School Activities Association announced Tuesday that it will sponsor soccer as a fully sanctioned sport.
