Players with Wisconsin ties figured into the scoring during the most recent round of play in the Toppserien, as Rosie Malone-Povolny (Marquette) and Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) were both on the scoresheet in Norway's top women's league.

Malone-Povolny, right, scored her first goal of the year in the 36th minute, helping Medkila IL get past visiting Vålerenga 2-1 for its first win of the season last Thursday. The 25-year-old had three goals in 23 appearances for Medkila last year and has 12 goals in 52 matches overall in her professional career, an impressive return for a midfielder.

Smyth also picked up her first goal of the season, but her 72nd-minute conversion was merely consolation for Amazon Grimstad in a 4-1 loss to host Arna-Bjørnar.

It looks like it could be another challenging season for Amazon Grimstad, which allowed three goals in a 5-minute span and has been outscored 9-1 in an 0-3-0 start in the 12-team league. Last year, Smyth scored the goal that kept the club in the top flight, staving off relegation by winning a playoff series.

  • Maegan Kelly (Marquette) also will be playing in Europe, as the Marquette Twitter account reports that she is headed to Icelandic club UMF Stjarnan. The midfielder-forward signed with FC Kansas City after her hometown team picked her in the fourth round of January's National Women's Soccer League draft, but didn't get into a match before being released last week. Kelly, 22, set the Marquette career assist record (37), was a three-time All-Big East Conference first-team pick and was named a third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a senior last fall. She'll be the second Marquette alum to play for Stjarnan: Forward Ashley Bares (Ozaukee) – now an assistant for the Golden Eagles – starred for the club in 2011 and '12. Stjarnan went 18-0-0 to win the Úrvalsdeild last year and opens the 2014 league season next Monday, but lost to Breidablik 1-0 last Friday in the Icelandic Super Cup. On Twitter: @maegskell
