Players with Wisconsin ties figured into the scoring during the most recent round of play in the Toppserien, as Rosie Malone-Povolny (Marquette) and Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) were both on the scoresheet in Norway's top women's league.
Malone-Povolny, right, scored her first goal of the year in the 36th minute, helping Medkila IL get past visiting Vålerenga 2-1 for its first win of the season last Thursday. The 25-year-old had three goals in 23 appearances for Medkila last year and has 12 goals in 52 matches overall in her professional career, an impressive return for a midfielder.
Smyth also picked up her first goal of the season, but her 72nd-minute conversion was merely consolation for Amazon Grimstad in a 4-1 loss to host Arna-Bjørnar.
It looks like it could be another challenging season for Amazon Grimstad, which allowed three goals in a 5-minute span and has been outscored 9-1 in an 0-3-0 start in the 12-team league. Last year, Smyth scored the goal that kept the club in the top flight, staving off relegation by winning a playoff series.
