Alex Horwath (UW) got his career in Sweden off to a great start, posting a shutout Saturday as host Ljungskile SK blanked Östersunds FK 1-0 in a Superettan opener.

Horwath, who spent the past two seasons in USL PRO after two years in Major League Soccer, made two saves in the clean sheet for the second-division club.

  • Tosaint Ricketts (UW-Green Bay) scored his sixth goal of the league season last Wednesday, but host Şanlıurfaspor answered with four straight goals to post a 4-1 victory in the 1. Lig match in Turkey. Ricketts has eight goals in 26 appearances in all competitions for Bucaspor (12-17-3), which has lost five straight to fall to 12th in the 19-team second division. • J.C. Banks (Milwaukee Riverside/UW-Green Bay) scored the lone goal for the Rochester Rhinos in their 3-1 loss to host Orlando City FC in a USL PRO opener Saturday night in Kissimmee, Fla. Banks pounced on an errant back pass by Lions midfielder Aodhan Quinn, then fired a rebound past Miguel Gallardo-Aparicio after the keeper stopped his initial shot to cut the Rhinos' deficit to 2-1 in the 54th. Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW-Green Bay) made his debut for the team, coming off the bench to play the final 36 minutes. On Twitter: @jcbanks11 @TWalls20
  • Forward Kyle Greig (Stevens Point) was named the USL PRO Player of the Week after scoring the first goal in OKC Energy history, the game-winner in a 2-0 victory over the Orange County Blues on Saturday. He added an assist in Monday's 4-2 loss to LA Galaxy II. Banks earned honorable mention.
  • Center back A.J. Cochran (UW), the 16th pick in this year's Major League Soccer SuperDraft, made his professional debut in the Houston Dynamo's 4-1 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday night in Frisco, Texas. The 21-year-old came on in the 62nd minute after starter David Horst was red carded for a challenge on Fabian Castillo. On Twitter: @Alec_Cochran
  • Midfielder Calum Mallace (Marquette) served in a corner kick that led to the final goal as the host Montreal Impact cruised past the New York Red Bulls 4-1 in an MLS Reserve League match on Sunday. On Twitter: @CMallace10
  • Defender Katie Kelly (Marquette) signed with Kokkola Futis 10 in Finland late last month. Kelly, 26, played the full 90 minutes in Kokkola F10's 4-0 loss to Merilappi United on March 29, the second game of the Naisten Liiga season. Kelly played for FC Kansas City in the National Women's Soccer League last season and had been trial with NWSL expansion side Houston Dash before heading to Finland. She previously played in Europe with Swedish clubs Kristianstads DFF (2010) and Hammarby IF DFF (2011) and with German side 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (2012). On Twitter: @KKelly21
  • There are three players with state ties on rosters of the nine NWSL teams, who had to set their opening day rosters Monday. But FC Kansas City rookie midfielder Maegan Kelly, Katie's younger sister, is the only one who will be active to start the season. Forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton North/UW-Milwaukee) will join Kelly in Kansas City in June after she finishes the Frauen-Bundesliga season with Bayern Munich in Germany, while Houston defender Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) suffered a torn ACL in her knee last month and is recovering after surgery. On Twitter: @maegskell @sarahapplehagen @lsesselmann
  • The NWSL announced that all of its matches this season will be streamed for free on YouTube.
