Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) traveled to Cyprus with the Canadian women's national team late last month.

But unlike previous visits to to the island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, she probably would rather forget her most recent trip.

The defender suffered a serious knee injury, reportedly a torn ACL, on Feb. 27 as the Canadians trained ahead of the Cyprus Cup. The 30-year-old Sesselmann underwent successful surgery to repair the injury on Thursday, she tweeted Friday.

Sesselmann has earned 39 caps with Canada since 2011, becoming a regular on the team's backline after acquiring dual citizenship – her father is a native of Canada.

She played in 19 of 22 matches for FC Kansas City in the inaugural National Women's Soccer League season last year as the team finished second in the eight-team league during the regular season, then was selected by the Houston Dash in January's expansion draft.

There were some questions if Sesselmann would join the Dash or pursue other options – as her Canadian and former FC Kansas City teammate Desiree Scott did, signing with English club Notts County Ladies FC. However, Sesselmann is listed on the Dash's roster and she has tweeted about the team as its April 12 opener nears.

Canada finished fifth out of 12 teams at the Cyprus Cup, slipping past Ireland 2-1 after going 2-1-0 in group play. It was the first time the team didn't play in the final in the tournament's seven-year history; the Canadians were runners-up in both 2012 and '13 with Sesselmann in the lineup.
