It appears that Eric Pothast (Marquette) is poised to start his professional soccer career in Sweden.

The center back has agreed to join Ängelholms FF in the second-tier Superettan for the 2014 season, club sporting director Stavros Papadopoulos told the Helsingborgs Dagblad newspaper in an article posted on its website Tuesday. Full article in Swedish

The one caveat is that Pothast, who completed his college career with the Golden Eagles in the third round of the NCAA tournament last month, wants to wait and see if he is selected in Thursday's Major League Soccer SuperDraft, and if so by which team and where. He wasn't invited to the MLS Combine, which wrapped up Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The 6-foot-3 Pothast, a native of Lake Zurich, Ill., finished his career with nine goals and four assists in 74 appearances (all starts) and was team captain for each of the past three years. Marquette compiled a 45-28-9 record during his four years.

He spent a few weeks training with Ängelholms last June after a recommendation by Marquette alum Matt Pyzdrowski, the club's top goalkeeper the the past three seasons. AFF, which finished sixth in the 16-team league in 2013, had another American on its roster in midfielder Bobby Warshaw, who was on loan from FC Dallas of MLS.

  • Goalkeeper Alex Horwath (UW) is on trial with Ljungskile, another Superettan club. The 26-year-old Horwath played in USL PRO each of the past two seasons, with the Wilmington Hammerheads and VSI Tampa Bay, after starting his career as an MLS pool goalkeeper in 2010 and spending 2011 with the New York Red Bulls. Midfielder Aaron Nichols, Horwath's former UW teammate, is heading into his first full season with Ljungskile after signing with the team last July. On Twitter: @AlexHorwath
  • Milwaukee Wave midfielder Marcio Leite was named the Major Indoor Soccer League Player of the Week after his five-assist game sparked a 28-12 victory over the Rochester Lancers last Saturday. Goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra, who made 35 saves in the win, and forward Nick Perera, who had a hat trick, also were lauded as the first-half Wave accounted for half of the six spots on the honor team. Milwaukee forward Carlos Munoz and defender Fabio Ribeiro were honorable mention selections.
