The Canadian national team defender was selected by the Houston Dash with the third selection in the National Women's Soccer League expansion draft Friday.
However, there is a disagreement as to whether Sesselmann is under contract with the Canadian Soccer Association – the U.S., Canadian and Mexican federations pay the salaries of selected national team players, including Sesselmann, to help fund the second-year league.
The Daily Wiz, which covers soccer in Kansas City, reported that the NWSL said Sesselmann is indeed under contract while her agent, Chuck Vine, has claimed otherwise through a series of tweets (@ChuckVine). Last season, the 30-year-old Sesselmann played in 19 of FC Kansas City's 22 regular-season matches and the team's lone playoff match, a 3-2 extra-time loss to eventual NWSL champion Portland Thorns FC.
The Dash passed on three other state players who were available: FC Kansas City midfielder-forward Casey Loyd (Cedarburg) and defender-midfielder Katie Kelly (Marquette) and the rights to forward-midfielder Lindsay Tarpley (Madison), which are held by the Chicago Red Stars.
