After spending a week in California training with the U.S. Under-20 women's national team last month, University of Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle is headed to Florida.

Lavelle is one of 24 players called in by coach Michelle French for the team's final camp before the roster for next month's CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in the Cayman Islands.

French will announce the 20-player qualifying roster following the week-long camp, which starts Saturday in Sunrise, Fla. The CONCACAF tournament, which will determine the region's qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup in Canada, is Jan. 9 to 19.

Lavelle has been a regular for the Under-20 team over the past year, and had a stellar debut season for the Badgers – she had six goals and six assists and was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year.

  • One of Lavelle's UW teammates, midfielder Kinley McNicoll, is one of 22 players in camp with the Canadian Under-20 women's team in Burnaby, British Columbia. The 10-day camp kicks off Wednesday. Canada isn't playing in the CONCACAF tournament because it qualified for the Under-20 Women's World Cup as the host country.
  • Midfielder Heather Handwork of Plainfield, Ill., who has verbally committed to Marquette for 2014, is one of 24 players named to the U.S. Under-18 women's national team roster for a week-long training camp that starts Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The team will scrimmage the San Diego Sea Lions, the reigning Women's Premier Soccer League champions, on Dec. 20. Handwork's older sister, Ashley, appeared in all 22 matches for Marquette as a freshman this fall.
  • Virginia coach Steve Swanson, an original member of the Milwaukee Wave, has taken over as the U.S. Under-23 women's national team coach. Swanson, who succeeds Notre Dame coach Randy Waldrum, led the U.S. to the title at the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. He also has coached the Under-16 and Under-18 girls national teams and assisted the Under-17, Under-18, Under-20 and full national teams.
