Milwaukee Marquette defender Danny Jarosz was named to the West team for the third annual Boys High School All-American Game.

Forty-two players were selected for the match in Camden, N.J., which is Dec. 14 – the same weekend as the NCAA Division I College Cup will be played in nearby Chester, Pa. The game will be streamed live on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America web site, NSCAAtv.com.

Jarosz, who has verbally committed to Marquette, will be the third Hilltoppers player to participate in the event, following midfielders Joe Naughton (2011) and Alex McBride (2012). Whitefish Bay defender Jake Taylor also played in last year's game.

The inaugural Girls High School All-American Game will be Dec. 7 in Raleigh, N.C., but only players who have completed their prep eligibility are allowed to play in the match, meaning Wisconsin players cannot be selected. Defender Kirsten Timmer, a Marquette recruit from Indiana's Hamilton Southeastern High School, is one of the 44 players chosen for the game.

  • Muskego (22-4-2), which won its second WIAA Division 1 state championship on Saturday, moved in to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 this week at No. 20. State runner-up Green Bay Preble (23-3-2) also received votes.
  • Five state teams are in the latest NSCAA Region VI rankings, led by No. 2 Muskego and No. 5 Preble. Division 1 semifinalist Hartland Arrowhead (19-1-2) is ninth, followed by Division 2 state champion Oregon (16-3-3) and runner-up Cedarburg (15-4-3) in 14th and 15th.
  • It was a pretty unique Championship Saturday at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Milwaukee's Uihlein Soccer Park. Not only was it the first one with four state finals, it also was the first time two state titles in a year were decided in penalty kicks: Muskego getting past Preble 4-2 following a 2-2 draw in Division 1, right after Oregon topped Cedarburg 4-3 following a 0-0 tie in the Division 2 match. Amazingly, it had been 15 years since the most recent final to be decided from the spot and only six of the previous 63 WIAA finals had gone to penalties. Here's a list of all eight boys finals to be decided by spot kicks:
Year Division Score Penalty kicks
1984 N/A Madison West 2, Brookfield Central 2 MW 4-3
1986 N/A Neenah 0, Madison West 0 N 3-2
1993 1 Mequon Homestead 1, Brookfield East 1 MH 3-2
1994 2 Oostburg 1, Delavan-Darien 1 O 4-2
1995 2 Whitefish Bay 1, Greendale 1 WB 4-3
1998 1 Wauwatosa East 0, Mequon Homestead 0 WE 6-5
2013 1 Muskego 2, Green Bay Preble 2 M 4-2
2013 2 Oregon 0, Cedarburg 0 O 4-3
  • Ashland, which blanked McFarland 3-0 and Green Bay Notre Dame 1-0 to win the Division 3 title in its state tournament debut, finished the season with some mind-boggling statistics. The Oredockers (27-1-0) outscored foes 133-5, including a 72-0 margin as they shut out their final 11 opponents, and won their final 19 matches.
  • Milwaukee University School shut out Racine Prairie School 1-0 to win the inaugural Division 4 title, ending one streak and continuing another. It was the Hawks' first loss at state since the 2003 final, a run of nine matches. But the Wildcats extended their dominance over Prairie School in finals: University School also beat the Hawks in Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 2 finals in 1993, '95 and '96.
  • With Muskego, Oregon and Ashland all claiming titles, it was the first time public schools won more than one state title in a year since the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association dissolved in 2000. Private schools have won 29 of the 41 boys soccer state championships awarded since they started to join the WIAA.
  • Senior striker Brody Kraussel was the hero of Muskego's 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Hartland Arrowhead in the Division 1 semifinals Friday night, as the Loyola (Ill.) recruit scored his 30th goal of the season on a drive from the top of the box with 19 seconds left. But don't overlook the major contribution from senior midfielder Michael Lafferty in the winning sequence. After Kraussel's left-footed shot was blocked by a Warhawks defender, Arrowhead looked to go the other way, but Lafferty stepped in and poked the ball away to Kraussel on the right side, setting up the dramatic game-winner.
  • The three-day total attendance for the 12 state matches was 9,024.
  • All four state finals will be aired on Fox Sports Wisconsin on a tape-delayed basis. The Division 2 final is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, with the Division 1 match at 9 p.m. The other two games will be shown on Monday, Nov. 18: the Division 3 final is scheduled for 7 p.m., followed by the Division 4 match at 9 p.m. All 12 state tournament games also will be uploaded to the WIAA's page on the NFHS Network, which also features 14 regular-season boys matches from the fall.
  • Here's a look at the final state leaders in goals and assists, as reported to our partners at the Wisconsin Sports Network. See more on the WSN boys soccer statistics page
