The last time the WIAA held a boys soccer state tournament without Milwaukee Marquette, the Hilltoppers weren't even a member of the organization.

But next week's 32nd annual event at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee won't include the Hilltoppers, who were knocked out of the Division 1 tournament with a 1-0 loss to Muskego in a sectional semifinal Thursday night on their home turf at Quad Park.

Senior Danny Baumann scored the lone goal in the 43rd minute and junior goalkeeper Brandon Kaebisch made five saves in the shutout for the Warriors (20-4-1), who are unbeaten in their past 15 matches (14-0-1).

Marquette (15-2-2), which has won the past three Division 1 state titles, lost a playoff game for the first time since a 1-0 double-overtime setback against Hartland Arrowhead in the state semifinals back on Oct. 29, 2009 – a streak of 21 matches.

The Hilltoppers qualified for state each of their first 13 years as a WIAA member, winning a record nine state championships and finishing second twice. Marquette also won 16 Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association titles.

  • Colin Koerber scored in the 83rd minute as Hartland Arrowhead (18-0-2) outlasted Menomonee Falls 2-1 in overtime to remain unbeaten.
  • Drew Knoebel's 69th-minute goal lifted Green Bay Preble over host Neenah 1-0 as the Hornets (21-3-1) extended their unbeaten streak to 12 (11-0-1) with their 10th consecutive shutout.
  • Woo Jin Jeon had a hat trick and Ghedi Omar added three assists as Madison West trounced archrival Madison Memorial 5-0 at Breese Stevens Field. Omar has three goals and four assists in three playoff games for the Regents, who lost to the Spartans 2-1 in Big Eight Conference play but are unbeaten in their past 12 games (11-0-1).
  • Senior Logan Tamke scored his 40th and 41st goals as Ashland rolled past Northland Pines 6-0 in Division 3. Tamke has eight goals in three playoff games for the Oredockers (24-1-0), who have outscored opponents 127-5 on the season with 20 shutouts and haven't allowed more than one goal in any game.
  • Also in Division 3, seniors Dillon Ballentine and Sam Shackett scored in a 3-minute span just before halftime as McFarland topped Sugar River 2-1 at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona for its 15th straight win.
  • Senior Tyus Groos scored all four of his team's goals, giving him 39 on the season, to lead Stevens Point Pacelli past Marshfield Columbus 4-2 in Division 4. Groos has 11 goals in three postseason matches for the Cardinals (24-0-0).
  • Lakeside Lutheran senior Isaiah Gronholz recorded his 15th multi-goal game of the season – and 11th in a row – scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Watertown Luther Prep in Division 4. Gronholz has scored all six of the Warriors' goals over the past two games and ranks second in the state with 45 on the season. Lakeside (16-1-2) is unbeaten in its past 18 matches, dating to a loss in its season opener Aug. 22.
  • Slinger, which was the No. 7 seed in its Division 2 sectional, was the lowest-seeded team to advance to a sectional final. Twenty-three of the sectional finalists were No. 1 seeds, and they are joined by four No. 2 seeds, two No. 3s, two No. 4s and Slinger.
  • Seven teams will be playing on their home fields in the sectional finals: Germantown (Division 1), Marshfield and Brookfield East (Division 2), Mount Horeb and Pewaukee (Division 3) and Waupun Central Wisconsin Christian and Sheboygan Christian-Lutheran (Division 4).
  • Eighteen of Thursday's 32 matches featured clean sheets, including a double shutout between Pewaukee and Grafton in Division 3. For the tournament, 56 percent of games have been shutouts (126 of 227).
  • Brookfield East remained 15th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25, while Arrowhead and Marquette were among others receiving votes.
  • The Spartans were second in the NSCAA Region VI rankings, which also included No. 4 Arrowhead, No. 5 Marquette, No. 12 Kettle Moraine and No. 15 Green Bay Preble.
  • Arrowhead and Marquette each moved up five spots in the Student Sports Fab 50, the Warhawks checking in at No. 40 and the Hilltoppers at No. 42.
