Andrew Stadler (Wauwatosa West) and Sandvikens IF continued their late-season surge Sunday, keeping their hopes alive of avoiding relegation in Sweden's Division 1 Norra.

Stadler set up Björn Berglund's game-winning goal in the 67th minute as visiting Sandvikens doubled up 10-man Dalkurd 4-2 to pull within one point of safety in the third-division league.

Sandvikens (7-13-5), which has collected 10 points during a four-game unbeaten streak, has 27 points – one point behind Athletic FC United. Sandvikens, however, has a better goal differential (minus-9 to minus-14), meaning they will keep their spot in the 14-team league for 2014 if they beat fourth-place BK Forward in their season finale Sunday and Athletic FC United loses or ties against ninth-place Valsta Syrianska IK.

  • James Weber (Hartford), who played the past two years with Gullingrens GOIF in Sweden and spent the last few months of the 2012-13 Major Indoor Soccer League season with the Milwaukee Wave, had surgery last week to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He's expected to be sidelined for six to nine months.
  • Lisa Philbin (Marquette) closed out her first professional season with another goal, scoring the opener in the 33rd minute as Kvarnsvedens IK tied host Djurgården 1-1 in an Elitettan finale Sunday in Sweden. Philbin, who joined the second division side midway through the year, scored four goals in 11 league matches and had five in 13 games in all competitions. Kvarnsvedens (11-9-6) finished fifth in the 14-team Elitettan. On Twitter: @lisaphilbin
  • Sarah Hagen (Appleton North/UW-Milwaukee) had both goals as host Bayern Munich blanked Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in Frauen-Bundesliga play Sunday in Germany. Hagen, who has scored in four of her past five matches, finished off a rebound in the 32nd minute and a breakaway in the 71st. She is tied for third in the league with four goals in six matches for Bayern Munich (4-1-1), which is third in the 12-team league - just one point behind leaders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and 1. FFC Frankfurt. Here's Hagen's first goal; the second one can be seen in this Frauen-Bundesliga recap (starting at 3:55). On Twitter: @sarahapplehagen
  • In Norway, Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) played the full 90 minutes as usual as host Amazon Grimstad posted a huge 2-0 victory over Sandviken on Sunday. Amazon Grimstad (3-12-6) is 11th in the 12-team Toppserien heading into the final week of the season, three points behind 10th-place Klepp but with a better goal differential. Those teams meet in a finale Nov. 2, with the winner keeping its spot in the league for 2014 and the loser needing to win a playoff against the second-place team from the 1. Division to stay in the top tier. Klepp would finish 10th if the teams tie in the match. On Twitter: @ShannonSmyth
  • Keara Thompson (UW-Milwaukee) scored her fourth goal of the season Sunday, but it wasn't enough as Medkila lost to Røa 3-1. Thompson's goal in the 65th pulled Medkila to within 2-1, but the home side scored 7 minutes later to seal the victory. Medkila, whose starting lineup also regularly features Rosie Malone-Povolny (Marquette), is 7-9-5 and ninth. On Twitter: @kearathompson12
  • Two weeks after a convincing 5-1 victory over Vålerenga in the NM Cupen semifinals, Katie Bethke (Eau Claire Memorial) and Avaldsnes dropped a 3-2 league decision to the same team. Avaldsnes, which is fourth in the Toppserien with a 10-9-2 record, closes out the league schedule at Stabæk (17-1-3) on Nov. 2, then plays the league champions again Nov. 23 in the cup final. Stabæk won the first meeting 5-1 back in June. On Twitter: @kbethke3
