The season couldn't have started much better for the University of Wisconsin men's and women's soccer teams.

Both Badgers sides are ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 this week, with the men's team 25th and the women's team checking in at No. 24.

The UW men (5-0-1), who thumped Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 5-1 on Friday night for their fifth consecutive win, haven't been ranked in the NSCAA poll since 2002, when they were 20th.

The Badgers also are 21st in the Soccer America Top 25, 22nd in both the TopDrawerSoccer.com and Soccer By Ives rankings, 29th in the College Soccer News Top 30 and received votes in the Soccer Times coaches' poll, and moved up two spots to No. 4 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region rankings.

Senior midfielder Tomislav Zadro, back after missing last season with a torn ACL, earned individual honors two weeks ago: He was the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week and made the College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com national teams of the week after posting two goals and two assists in wins over Western Michigan on Sept. 6 and DePaul on Sept. 8.

Against DePaul, Zadro scored the equalizer with 1 second left in regulation, then made a great play to set up the overtime game-winner. Video highlights

Meanwhile, the UW women head into Sunday's Big Ten opener at Purdue and ranked 24th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll – the Badgers also received votes in the Soccer Times coaches' poll this week.

Freshman midfielder Rose Lavelle was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week and was considered for the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week for UW, which slipped one spot to fourth in the NSCAA Great Lakes rankings. Lavelle had two goals and three assists as the Badgers beat Loyola (Ill.) 5-1 and UW-Milwaukee 3-0 to close out non-conference play.

MILESTONES

Edgewood College coach Tim Alexander became the 18th coach in NCAA history to record 500 victories last Sunday when then Eagles rallied from a halftime deficit and beat host Ripon 3-1 in a non-conference match.

Alexander, the only coach in Edgewood men's and women's history, has an overall record of 501-303-58. He's 226-189-34 in his 24th season with the men's program and 275-114-24 in his 21st year with the women's program.

Junior midfielder Jennifer Dailey (Waunakee) scored the equalizer in the 70th minute against Ripon, senior midfielder Brianna Franken (De Pere) netted the go-ahead goal in the 78th – her first goal since 2011 – and junior defender Jenna Mineau (Green Bay Notre Dame) added an insurance goal in the 87th as Edgewood pulled away to give Alexander the milestone victory.

Dailey was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women's student-athlete of the week. In addition to her goal on Sunday, she scored on both of her shots in a 3-0 victory over host Beloit College last Friday.

  • Like Alexander, UW-Milwaukee women's coach Greg Henschel (Brookfield East/UW-Oshkosh) has found success coaching both men's and women's teams during his career. The Panthers' 2-1 win over Illinois State on Friday night was the 300th overall victory of his career, which included 13 seasons as the men's and women's coach at UW-Whitewater.

HOT AND COLD

The UW-Milwaukee men topped Western Illinois 1-0 in a weather-delayed match Thursday night to improve to 5-0-1, the Panthers' best start to a season since the 1996 team won its first seven games.

  • The Madison College men's team won its first two games of the season, matching its victory total from the previous two seasons combined and starting 2-0-0 for the first time since 2007.
  • UW-Stevens Point started the season 0-4-2 before beating Marian 3-1 on Wednesday. How rare is that? The Pointers have had four losses or fewer in nine of their 15 previous seasons as a varsity program.

HONOR ROLL

Logan Andryk (Milwaukee Marquette) was the NACC men's student-athlete of the week after a huge week for Milwaukee School of Engineering – the sophomore scored or assisted on all five of the Engineers' goals in wins over Beloit and Lake Forest (Ill.).

Andryk posted his first collegiate hat trick and assisted on the other goal in a 4-1 victory over the Buccaneers, then scored his sixth  goal in as many games to give MSOE a 1-0 win over the Foresters.

  • Andryk's former prep teammate, Notre Dame sophomore midfielder Patrick Hodan (Milwaukee Marquette), was the Atlantic Coast Conference men's player of the week. Hodan scored his first goal of the season and added an assist as the Fighting Irish beat host Syracuse 3-0 last Friday in their inaugural ACC match.
  • Robbie Boyd (Milwaukee Marquette) scooped up the Horizon League men's offensive player of the week honor after scoring in both of UW-Milwaukee's wins last week. He scored the opener in a 2-1 overtime victory over DePaul on Friday, then had the game-winner and added an assist in Sunday's 3-0 win over Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis. Panthers freshman goalkeeper Liam Anderson was listed among the league's other top defensive performers for the week after blanking IUPUI for his second shutout.
  • Boyd was among others considered for the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
  • Marquette senior center back Eric Pothast was named to the Big East weekly honor roll. He scored his first goal of the season on a volley inside in the 6-yard box with 58 seconds left in last Friday's match at Michigan, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 victory. It was Pothast's eighth career goal; five of them have been game-winners.
  • UW-Platteville senior goalkeeper Ian Christensen (Oregon) claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award after stopping 10 of 11 shots over three matches last week. UW-Oshkosh senior midfielder Faisal Bah was the offensive honoree on the heels of scoring the lone goal in Sunday's 1-0 double-overtime win over Wartburg (Iowa).
  • The Midwest Conference women's offensive player of the week was St. Norbert junior striker Katie Vanden Avond (De Pere), who had back-to-back hat tricks in wins over Concordia (Wis.) and Lawrence last weekend. Vanden Avond came into the week with 11 goals in six matches and all four of the Green Knights' game-winning goals.
  • Loras (Iowa) junior goalkeeper Hannah Wilson (Waunakee) collected the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's defensive award after recording three wins last week. Wilson allowed two goals on nine shots, including a four-save performance in a 1-0 road victory over UW-Oshkosh that was her second clean sheet of the season.
  • Junior forward Kelly Lewers, who scored the winning goal and assisted on two other goals as UWM beat host Miami (Ohio) 4-3 for its first victory of the year, was among the Horizon League women's other top offensive performers. UW-Green Bay sophomore defender Justy Linton, meanwhile, was on the defensive list after scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois and helping the Phoenix post two clean sheets on the week.

POLLING PLACE

The UW-Milwaukee men are 18th in the latest Soccer By Ives Top 25, up six spots from last week's rankings.

"Few folks would have pegged Wisconsin as a college soccer powerhouse when the season began, but the state boasts two unbeaten teams in the Top 25 as Wisconsin and Milwaukee boast identical 4-0-1 records," the website commented.

Additionally, the Panthers received votes in the NSCAA Top 25, the College Soccer News Top 30 and the Soccer Times Top 25 coaches' poll. City rival Marquette (3-2-1) also received votes in the CSN and Soccer Times polls.

  • UWM also moved up two spots to No. 5 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region poll.
  • UW-Oshkosh (4-0-3) remained 14th in the NSCAA Division III national poll and second in the North Region rankings, which also include No. 5 UW-Whitewater (4-0-0) and No. 10 Carroll (3-2-1). Carthage (6-0-0), meanwhile, is ninth in the Central Region. The Titans checked in at No. 23 in the D3Soccer.com rankings, while Whitewater was among other teams receiving votes.

UW-Eau Claire slipped three spots to seventh in the North Region, while Carthage received votes in the Central Region rankings. Whitewater also received votes in this week's D3Soccer.com poll.
  • Maranatha Baptist (3-2-0) moved up one place into a tie for fourth in the NCCAA Division II women's rankings.
