The Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch, the new FieldTurf stadium being built at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona, is expected to play host to its first high school matches Friday when Verona faces DeForest.

Final inspection of the field is scheduled for Wednesday, according to Madison Area Youth Soccer Association executive director Chris Lay. If all goes well, the Wildcats will play host to the Norskies in non-conference play two days later with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

Madison Edgewood, which will join Verona in calling Goodman Pitch home, likely will make its debut on the new field Sept. 10 with a Southern Badger Conference match against Monona Grove.

  • The Fox Valley Association is a nine-team conference this fall, as Menasha isn't fielding a varsity team. According to the Appleton Post Crescent, the decision was prompted by a combination of a low turnout of players and the fact that most of those players are freshmen and sophomores. The Bluejays, who were 0-9-0 in the FVA in 2012, have a junior varsity team this year and hope to return to varsity play next fall. Read more from the Post Crescent

The Hilltoppers are first in the website's state rankings, followed by Hartland Arrowhead and Kettle Moraine, and beat West Allis Hale 6-0 on Tuesday night to extend their unbeaten streak against Wisconsin teams to 46 games (44-0-2).

  • Middleton cruised past Mount Horeb 5-1 in its season opener last Thursday, giving new Cardinals coach Ben Kollasch his first career victory as coach at his alma mater. Kollasch succeeded Ken Burghy, who retired last fall after 29 seasons.
  • Also on Thursday, Kiel posted a 3-1 victory over Cedar Grove-Belgium for coach David Radder's first win. Radder played for the Raiders under legendary coach John Adema, who led the program for 16 years until passing away in April at age 76.
