For the second straight year, Andrew Stadler (Wauwatosa West) turned heads in a Swedish Cup match.
And this time, his team pulled off a major upset.
Stadler set up the 76th-minute equalizer and scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 108th minute as host Sandvikens IF stunned AIK 3-2 after extra time in a second-round cup match Thursday night.
This was the type of result that makes cup competitions around the world so special: AIK is in fourth place in the top-level Allsvenskan, while Sandvikens IF is in the relegation zone in the third-tier Division 1 Norra. Sandvikens is roughly 50 spots below AIK in the Swedish soccer pyramid, though that's not exact because the third division is split into North and South divisions.
A year ago, Sandvikens had a 3-1 lead against Malmö, but the Allsvenskan side scored twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation to tie it and went on to win 6-3 after extra time. This year, Sandvikens came back twice en route to the upset.
American Seth Randolph – Stadler's former college teammate at George Washington – scored the first equalizer in first-half stoppage time, and Stadler assisted on Jens Åberg's tying goal with 14 minutes left in regulation. The winner 3 minutes into the second 15-minute period of extra time was a fine goal, as he chipped a shot past the keeper from the right side for his sixth goal of the season. (Video below)
There was even more drama, though, as AIK was awarded a penalty kick in the 118th. Nabil Bahoui stepped to the spot looking to force a shootout, but Rickard Andersson came up with the save to seal the victory.
