Marquette defenders Paul Dillon and Axel Sjoberg and the Thunder Bay Chill had a frustrating end to a phenomenal season.

The Chill took the lead just 2 minutes in to Sunday night's USL Premier Development League final against the host Austin Aztex, but it was all downhill from there. Thunder Bay goalkeeper Stephen Paterson conceded a penalty kick and was sent off just 2 minutes later and the Aztex went on to a 3-1 victory in front of 4,253 fans at House Park.

Sito Seoane converted the penalty following Paterson's red card, scored the go-ahead goal in the 22nd and set up Khury Shelton's insurance goal in first-half stoppage time as he was named the game's MVP. Seoane had five goals in Austin's four playoff games, including all four game-winners.

Dillon helped create several scoring chances for the Chill (15-2-1). His long throw-in in the opening minutes was partially cleared out but found its way to Zetroy Robertson, who shot from 20 yards. Cook parried the ball, but Pedro Adan finished off the rebound.

Sjoberg nearly pulled Thunder Bay level at 2 just before halftime, but a header by the 6-foot-7 center back was saved by Aztex keeper Devin Cook and Shelton made it 3-1 a minute later on the othe end. Dillon had a chance to bring the Chill back within a goal in the 54th, but shot wide left on a penalty kick after Sullivan Silva was taken down in the box.

All-PDL selection Sjoberg played all 90 minutes for Thunder Bay, while Dillon logged 84 minutes. The Aztex, coached by Paul Dalglish – the son of former Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish and a former professional player in Europe and Major League Soccer, finished 15-1-2.

NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE

Josh Grant scored from 30 yards out in the 18th minute and Jose Manel Bel added an insurance goal on a rebound in the 88th as first-year club RVA FC topped the Sonoma County Sol 2-0 in the NPSL championship game Sunday night in Richmond, Va.

  • No players from the Midwest Region Central Conference made the inaugural 11-player All-NPSL team. Detroit City FC defender Josh Rogers was the only Midwest player on the honor team.
  • Rogers and two teammates, defender Zeke Harris and midfielder Fabio Pereira, were the Midwest players selected to the inugural NPSL Supporters' XI, determined by fan voting.
