Aug. 1, 1992: UW-Milwaukee women's coach Laura Moynihan passed away at the age of 47 after an 11-month battle with stomach cancer. Moynihan was a pioneer for girls soccer in the state, creating the Wisconsin's first girls soccer league in Wauwatosa in 1977 and starting the state girls Olympic Development Program. Her contributions are remembered in several areas: UWM named the field at Engelmann Stadium in her honor in 2011; the U.S. Youth Soccer Under-17 girls national championship trophy is called the Laura Moynihan Cup; and the Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School girls team plays host to the Laura Moynihan Memorial Tournament each spring.
